Lilith

The Dark Goddess, the Owl Goddess, The Temptress, The Dark Maid, Mother of Demons...

Lilith is a Sumerian Goddess, a Goddess of many names and stories. Little is known of this mysterious powerful goddess, and the stories available to us are not written in stone. I have learned the best way to learn about Lilith is to tune in to her, to listen to her, to connect to your inner Lilith.

There are many stories about Lilith's beginnings. In Hebrew legends Lilith is a dangerous and beautiful goddess who was Adams first wife. She refused to submit to Adam, to perform the way a woman was expected too. Lilith was punished for her crime of disobedience by being banished from Paradise. From that moment on she was the known as the unruly "goddess of demons." Sound familiar? In our times a women who does not confirm, or submit, or just lay down and shut up is labeled a number of unpleasant things as well. Furthermore in Jewish folklore, Lilith is known as a sexual vampire, a Succubus who would come to men at night and cause wet dreams.

Lilith is associated with freedom, playfulness, pleasure and sexuality. Her symbols are the Owl, snake and apples.

Currently, Lilith has better word of mouth. She is known as an independent Goddess, a confident and proudly sexual woman who refused to submit to her husband. A woman who would rather leave Paradise than submit to a man's wills.

Has Lilith come to you? Ask yourself what are you afraid of? Where do you need to regain your freedom? What is your relationship to your sexuality and your power?

"I'm not afraid of you anymore." She said as she stepped into the darkness.

I encountered Lilith a number of years ago. I was younger, just out of a very mentally abusive but sexually exciting relationship and deep into a bad run of relationships with males. I was at the point where I realized how much of myself I was giving away, I was dis-empowered, angry and disconnected from my sexuality. I started to read the wonderful book Women Who Run With Wolves and made a point to erect a Goddess alter. I tried at least 5 different Goddesses, none of them were right. One night, up late listening to music I had a short story idea. My main characters name would be Lilith. I wrote it in one night, the healing and release that happened with this story was life changing. I looked up the name after the story was complete, I could not pin at that time where I knew the name from. During my work with Lilith I felt like Eve encountering Lilith in the Garden. Eve being given the power, support and information she needed to break free.

Now, in present time I have a deep, healing and energizing connection to Lilith, and to myself. I've worked heavily with her, and she is always present.

Lilith & Eve

"Goddess of the night
I feel your wings support me
and your ancient knowledge flow within me
I am power
I am history
I am sexual
I am goddess."
My original chant to Lilith
